Moynihan Train Hall: A Holiday Destination in New York City
A train station might not be the first place one associates with holiday festivities, yet New York City’s Moynihan Train Hall has successfully redefined the commuting experience. This year, the station has transformed into a joyous hub, particularly during the holiday season, making it a destination rather than just a transit point.
As visitors approach, they are greeted by red and green lights adorning the exterior, while tasteful white lights and wreaths enhance both the entrances and key interior areas. The historic skylight has been elegantly embellished, adding to the festive atmosphere, and serves as a reminder of its cinematic role in the classic Miracle on 34th Street from 1947.
For those taking a stroll, the ambiance is further enriched by live holiday music. During the season, The Moynihan Music Series presents a variety of free performances thanks to the collaboration with Sing for Hope. This New York City-based nonprofit aims to infuse hope and healing through the arts. Featured acts include the Big Apple Quintet on December 16, LaGuardia High School’s Holiday Showcase on December 17, and many more throughout the month.
“These performances transform this iconic space into a stage for connection and celebration, reminding us of the power of art to uplift and inspire,” noted Camille Zamora, co-founder and co-executive director of Sing for Hope, highlighting the initiative’s impact.
Additionally, holiday cheer will be spread outside the terminal with pop-up performances from The Broadway Carolers scheduled for December 17 and December 19.
On the first floor, visitors can explore retail options conveniently set for holiday shopping. Shops such as Kiehl’s, Moleskine, and La Maison du Chocolat offer a variety of unique gift options. To ease the burden of last-minute purchases, complimentary gift wrapping services are available.
Contrary to typical perceptions of train station dining, Moynihan Food Hall stands out as an underrated culinary treasure. Since its opening in 2021, it has drawn locals and visitors alike seeking beloved city delicacies. Options range from Alidoro to E.A.K. Ramen, alongside popular spots like Cha Cha Matcha and the hidden gem, Burger Joint. The food hall’s vibrant environment is complemented by The Irish Joint, which features seasonal drinks like The Frosty Farewell, making it an inviting space to work or relax.
The building also houses a U.S. post office, an especially picturesque locale for mailing holiday cards or gifts. Open seven days a week, the post office operates from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and features extended hours on weekends, ensuring convenience for last-minute senders.
Moynihan Train Hall’s central location in The Penn District allows easy access to many of New York City’s holiday attractions, including Macy’s and the High Line-Moynihan Connector. This proximity highlights its role as a gateway to festive explorations in iconic neighborhoods such as Times Square, Hell’s Kitchen, and the Garment District.
“New York City is always buzzing with energy during the holidays, with events and experiences drawing people from all over the world,” remarked Hope Knight, president and CEO of Empire State Development. “Moynihan Train Hall has become a popular destination itself—especially this time of year—and serves as a gateway to all the seasonal splendor, while paying homage to the city’s legacy of business, talent, and innovation.”
