Tuchel Addresses Rashford and Foden’s Performance in First Match
England’s head coach Thomas Tuchel has reached out to players Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden after a lackluster display in the recent 2-0 win against Albania. Tuchel emphasized that he values their contributions, both on and off the pitch.
In his debut match leading the Three Lions, Tuchel noted that both Rashford and Foden did not significantly impact the game as expected. Following the victory, he remarked that their performances weren’t reflective of their true potential.
The national team is set to play Latvia at Wembley on Monday, which marks their second qualifier for the 2026 World Cup.
“I took the opportunity to discuss their performances with both players, and I did it in front of the entire squad,” Tuchel shared in an interview with BBC Sport. “They understand that I value their efforts, especially in their off-the-ball roles.”
Tuchel praised their defensive work, citing statistics that highlight their commitment to high pressing and counter-pressing strategies. “Marcus made numerous forward runs when we had possession that we unfortunately did not capitalize on. He may have faced some misfortune concerning timing, which caused us to overlook him at times,” he explained.
As for Foden, Tuchel acknowledged that the young forward has been struggling to regain his rhythm this season. However, he expressed confidence that both players possess the right mindset and understanding of what is expected from them.
“Their off-the-ball effort was commendable, and that determination is what truly matters,” Tuchel added.
This match marked Rashford’s first start for England in over a year while he is currently on loan at Aston Villa from Manchester United. Foden, on the other hand, has faced challenges during his season with Manchester City.
Looking ahead to the game against Latvia, Tuchel mentioned that he is prepared to implement changes in the starting lineup. Despite this, he reassured that selections will not solely be based on last performances, indicating a thoughtful approach to team management.
