The aftermath of the Lapu Lapu Day event in Vancouver has left residents and attendees grappling with profound shock and sorrow following a tragic incident on Saturday night.
Shortly after 8 p.m., a man drove his SUV into a crowd, resulting in the deaths of 11 individuals and injuring many others.
Bjorn Villaruel, who was present at the festival, recounted the moment chaos erupted as he prepared to leave. “I was just standing at one of the booths buying something when I heard this loud banging sound,” he shared with Global News. “I saw people getting thrown into the air just a few feet away from me.”
Initially perceiving it as a car accident, Villaruel soon realized the SUV was accelerating towards more individuals and food trucks. “It was horrific,” he said, emotionally expressing his desire to help those affected. He described a busy atmosphere, emphasizing that no one anticipated such violence during a vibrant community event.
Aadiah Muhamad and her husband, Mohamed Sairmen, were operating their Kampong food truck, serving Malaysian cuisine throughout the day. They were wrapping up for the evening when Muhamad reported hearing a series of loud bangs. “It sounded like an explosion,” she stated.
Peering out from their truck, they were met with a shocking and harrowing sight: a person lying lifeless on the ground. “We saw people behind our truck who were injured,” Sairmen noted. “One man was clutching his leg.” The couple rushed to assist those in need, deeply saddened by the unfolding tragedy. “We are heartbroken for the victims,” Muhamad lamented, questioning how such violence could affect a community known for its warmth and kindness.
Global BC anchor Jason Pires, who emceed the festival, described it as a joyful and family-oriented occasion. He noted the stark contrast between the celebration and the tragedy that ensued. “It’s just devastating for such a compassionate, hardworking community,” he reflected, highlighting the emotional impact on everyone involved.
As the investigation continues, Kai-Ji Adam Lo, 30, has been charged with multiple counts of second-degree murder and remains in custody awaiting a court appearance. The motive behind this tragic act is still under investigation, leaving many questions unanswered.
