Shooting Reported at Vanderbilt University; Multiple Injuries and Arrests Made

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A warning was issued for Vanderbilt University’s campus on Saturday afternoon following a shooting incident at Sutherland House, a dormitory for first-year students located in the 1900 block of South Drive. The alert raised concerns due to injuries and subsequent arrests linked to the event.

The university communicated through its AlertVU platform, informing the campus community of the situation: “ALERT! A shooting has been reported near the Vanderbilt campus at Sutherland.” A directive was issued advising individuals to “RUN, HIDE, FIGHT” and avoid the area as police responded.

Metro dispatch received a call regarding a disorderly crowd near Sutherland House shortly after 4:30 p.m. However, as the investigation progressed, this call was escalated to a shooting incident.

According to the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD), preliminary investigations indicate that the shooting occurred amid a dispute involving construction workers at the dormitory related to issues of employment termination.

In the initial reports from the scene, law enforcement stated two people had sustained injuries. Later updates from MNPD confirmed that only one individual suffered a gunshot wound to the arm, while Vanderbilt clarified that two people were injured in total.

By 6 p.m., Vanderbilt’s AlertVU page announced that the primary suspect had been apprehended and that there were no ongoing risks to the campus community. However, MNPD later confirmed that two suspects, one potentially armed, had been taken into custody nearby at a MAPCO gas station.

Shortly before 7:30 p.m., an updated statement from Vanderbilt specified that five individuals were in custody. Authorities were investigating the conflict among external contractors providing maintenance at the vacant residence hall. Reports indicated that shots were fired by at least two individuals, and two of the injured parties were taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Further updates revealed that by 11:18 p.m., two suspects remained in custody, with a total of three individuals having been transported to the medical center as a result of the incident.

Video footage shared by a witness captured what appeared to be the sound of gunfire, followed by chaotic scenes of individuals clashing in the parking lot with objects in their hands.

Emotions ran high as the event unfolded; Solalika Singhal, whose daughter was on campus training to become a resident advisor, expressed her concerns about the safety of the university. Reflecting on the incident, she stated, “I think it’s very scary for being a parent… you cannot expect those kinds of things, that somebody with a gun is coming to the campus or something like that.”

Currently, there are no additional details available about the shooting. Authorities have assured that the investigation is active, and more information will be disclosed as it is acquired.

This is a developing story. Further updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
