Three businesses in Ontario have faced significant penalties after a joint investigation uncovered their employment of numerous foreign nationals without the necessary authorization.
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) disclosed on Friday that CDA Landscape Services, based in Ajax, Ontario, was fined $400,000 for employing 20 workers who lacked proper documentation.
Additionally, TDA Landscape Services and SDA Services both received fines of $25,000 each for employing two unauthorized workers.
On February 28, the three companies pleaded guilty to multiple charges related to these employment practices.
The investigation, a collaborative effort between the CBSA and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), began in 2019 following the arrest of a foreign national for impaired driving. This incident prompted authorities to uncover a broader network involving over 700 unauthorized workers in southern and eastern Ontario. Some of these individuals were also discovered to be inadmissible to Canada and have been subsequently removed from the country.
According to Aaron McCrorie, vice president of the CBSA’s intelligence and enforcement branch, the actions taken against these businesses underscore a rigorous investigation process and an unwavering commitment to upholding the integrity of Canada’s immigration framework.
The CBSA indicated that it has deported 16,470 foreign nationals for immigration violations since the previous year, highlighting ongoing enforcement efforts aimed at maintaining lawful employment practices across the nation.
