“Before I took over as Minister, I had said this to my leaders. I had met Amit Shah and he had asked me how many films do I have in the pipeline. I told him I have about 25 scripts and 22 films,” Gopi said, adding that he is expecting permission to resume acting
Suresh Gopi, the actor-turned-politician and the sole Lok Sabha member from Kerala representing the BJP, made a significant revelation during a recent meeting. Serving as the Union Minister of State for Tourism, Gopi expressed his desire to step down from his ministerial role, stating that his true passion lies in acting, and his life feels incomplete without it.
During his address, Gopi candidly remarked, “Acting is my passion and without films I cannot exist. If I am removed (as the MoS) due to that, I will be most happy.” His comments highlight a growing tension between his political responsibilities and his love for cinema.
Gopi further elaborated on the situation he finds himself in since assuming the ministerial position. He recalled a conversation with Amit Shah where he mentioned having 25 scripts and 22 films ready to go. He expressed hope for the opportunity to return to acting soon.
“However, one thing I can tell you… I will be acting for the film ‘Ottakomban’ on September 6,” the BJP MP confirmed, signaling his commitment to re-entering the film industry while managing his political obligations.
Gopi acknowledged the challenge of balancing his ministerial responsibilities with his role as a public representative in Thrissur. He conveyed his wish to spend more time with his constituents, emphasizing that stepping away from the ministerial post would allow him to pursue both acting and his duties as a legislator effectively.
Having achieved a significant electoral victory in Thrissur, Gopi helped the BJP secure its first Lok Sabha seat in Kerala. His journey into politics was marked by initial hesitance about taking on a ministerial role due to previously committed film projects.
Despite his reluctance, pressure from the party leadership led him to accept the position of Minister of State for Tourism just before his swearing-in, a decision that has since prompted him to reevaluate his priorities.
With a prolific career that includes over 250 films, Gopi is celebrated as the ‘Angry Young Man of Malayalam cinema,’ a title that underscores his lasting impact on the industry since his debut in the mid-1980s.
Gopi’s political journey began in collaboration with former Congress Chief Minister K. Karunakaran. However, after Karunakaran’s exit from active politics and the rise of Oommen Chandy, Gopi found himself at a crossroads, leading to his eventual departure from the Congress party.
