As previously announced, this stage adaptation, rooted in the film PURPLE RAIN, will feature a story by Prince himself. The book will be crafted by Tony Award winner and two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, based on the original screenplay by Albert Magnoli and William Blinn. The music and lyrics will be by Prince, with direction from Tony Award nominee Lileana Blain-Cruz.
Music supervision will be led by Tony Award winner Jason Michael Webb, who will also oversee musical arrangements and orchestrations for the production.
L Londell McMillan, Chairman of The NorthStar Group, and Larry Mestel, Founder & CEO of Primary Wave Music, previously announced that Morris Hayes and Bobby Z—both of whom have longstanding ties with Prince—have joined the production as music advisers. Hayes was the keyboardist for Prince’s band, “The New Power Generation,” for nearly two decades and served as Prince’s musical director. McMillan and Mestel emphasized the importance of including Hayes and Bobby Z to ensure that this production aligns with Prince’s original vision, stating, “Their extensive experience with Prince will help us honor his legacy and bring a unique magic to the stage.”
