Sam Menzin, the assistant general manager of the Detroit Tigers, stepped down from his position on Thursday following an internal investigation that suggested he sent inappropriate photographs to several women within the organization. Reports from The Athletic indicate that these unsolicited images were transmitted through Snapchat, a platform known for its temporary messages.
Before any official action could be taken to terminate his employment due to purported misconduct, Menzin resigned. The investigation by the Tigers confirmed allegations of improper behavior, although the organization did not detail the specific nature of these claims in their communications.
The Tigers released a statement emphasizing their commitment to maintaining a respectful and safe working environment, noting, “This type of behavior is contrary to our standards and has absolutely no place within our organization.” They affirmed that the club acted swiftly upon learning about the allegations against Menzin.
In a text message to The Athletic, Menzin attributed his resignation to personal reasons and an intention to shift careers, including a move to New York to address family matters. Following his departure, he did not engage with further requests for comment.
Reports from two women employed by the Tigers indicated that they received explicit images from Menzin as far back as 2017, while a third woman, who is involved in baseball but not specifically with the Tigers, reported receiving similar communications around 2018-2019. These accounts were provided on the condition of anonymity.
Additional confirmations came from sources who claimed that both women had shared their experiences shortly following the incidents. One woman articulated the prevailing sentiment among staff, suggesting that fears of disbelief prevented many from speaking out. “It’s like no one says anything, because who is going to believe them when they say Sam Menzin did this?” she reflected. “It always felt like saying something wasn’t an option.”
Menzin’s tenure with the Tigers spanned over 13 years, starting in 2012 as a baseball operations intern. He rose through the ranks, becoming the director of baseball operations and professional scouting in 2015, before being named assistant general manager in 2021.
