Governor Tim Walz’s Controversial Remarks on Tesla and Elon Musk
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, a Democrat, recently found himself at the center of controversy following remarks he made about Tesla and its CEO, Elon Musk. During a town hall meeting in Rochester, Minnesota, Walz attempted to clarify his previous comments, stating that his remarks were intended as a joke rather than a serious attack.
“This guy bugs me in a way that’s probably unhealthy,” Walz expressed, referring to Musk. He acknowledged the potential negative reception of his remarks, explaining, “I have to be careful about being a smarta–. I was making a joke. These people have no sense of humor. They are the most literal people.”
Walz’s comments stemmed from an earlier event in Wisconsin, where he humorously noted the decline of Tesla’s stock, which has dropped significantly. “Some of you know this. On the iPhone, they’ve got that little stock app. I added Tesla to it to give me a little boost during the day — $225 and dropping,” he remarked. He added, “And if you own one, we’re not blaming you. You can take dental floss and pull the Tesla thing off,” poking fun at both the company and its recent stock performance.

Despite the light-hearted approach, the context is significant, as Tesla’s stock has decreased by 41.4% year-to-date. Walz’s jesting attitude toward the stock’s downturn has raised eyebrows, particularly given that Minnesota’s state employee pension fund holds over one million shares in the company.
In addition to his jest, Walz criticized Musk for his involvement in federal initiatives aimed at workforce reduction. He highlighted Musk’s role in the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which seeks to cut federal jobs as a means of cost-saving. “They’re all butthurt about the Tesla thing, but they don’t care about the disrespect they have shown to employees at the Minneapolis VA who care for our veterans, and they fire them. They don’t care,” Walz said.

Walz went on to express his disappointment in Musk’s priorities, suggesting that if he were the richest man in the world, he would prefer to spend his wealth helping others directly. “Maybe it’s just me. If I’m the richest man in the world, I’m like out on the streets handing out money,” he stated, emphasizing a desire for philanthropy over corporate self-interest.
As the conversation about corporate responsibility and the societal impact of influential figures like Musk continues, Walz’s remarks reflect a nuanced view of the relationship between wealth, power, and accountability in today’s economic landscape.
