Timothée Chalamet Embodies Bob Dylan in ‘A Complete Unknown’

In a captivating portrayal of Bob Dylan, Timothée Chalamet takes center stage in James Mangold’s biopic, “A Complete Unknown.” This film captures Dylan’s formative years during the early 1960s within the vibrant Greenwich Village folk scene, a time when he mingled with notable figures such as Joan Baez and Pete Seeger.

Chalamet dedicated five years to preparing for this challenging role, which involved not just acting, but immersing himself in the musical world of Dylan. His preparation included learning to sing, play guitar, and master the harmonica—skills he demonstrated throughout the film in live performances, rather than relying on pre-recorded tracks.

Five Years of Immersive Preparation

The journey to bring this film to life began five years ago when Chalamet and Mangold first envisioned it, well before the delays brought on by the pandemic and the actors’ strike. These challenges inadvertently provided Chalamet with additional time to delve deep into Dylan’s music and personality.

Initially not a hardcore Dylan enthusiast, Chalamet transformed his understanding over this period. He studied archival footage, sought out rare recordings, and engaged in rigorous training with a range of vocal and dialect coaches to authentically embody the musician. His commitment enabled him to perform live on set, showcasing songs like “I Was Young When I Left Home” and “The Times They Are A-Changin’.” Chalamet emphasized that the real essence of performing could not be captured in a studio setting; the live performances allowed him to connect with the music on a profound level.

Director James Mangold was initially inclined to use studio recordings for Chalamet’s performances but was swayed when he witnessed Chalamet’s live rendition of “Song to Woody.” The intimacy and authenticity of Chalamet’s performance convinced Mangold that live singing would enhance the film’s emotional depth. Chalamet’s ability to maintain character even off-camera reflects a commitment typical of actors seeking to create fully immersive experiences.

Monica Barbaro’s Transformation into Joan Baez

Alongside Chalamet, Monica Barbaro portrays Joan Baez, a legendary folk artist in her own right. Their characters first meet at Gerde’s Folk City, setting the stage for a powerful musical partnership. Baez, known for her distinctive soprano, is depicted as a significant influence on young Dylan.

Barbaro, who did not have a formal singing background, worked closely with vocal coach Eric Vetro, famous for preparing actors for musical roles, including Austin Butler’s portrayal of Elvis Presley. Despite facing the pressures of Baez’s vocal prowess, Barbaro performed live alongside Chalamet, including their emotional duet of “It Ain’t Me Babe.”

Barbaro expressed gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate musically with Chalamet, highlighting how the timing of their meeting enhanced their performances. Her approach to the role reflects an understanding of Baez’s musical finesse while also showcasing her own growth as a performer.

“A Complete Unknown” is now in theaters.
