Fishing in Monster Hunter Wilds can be an exciting way to collect resources for cooking, but locating certain fish types involves overcoming specific challenges. Among these is the elusive Whopper, a prized catch for any player.

To set out on your quest for a Whopper, you must first accept the Catch of a Lifetime side quest from Kanya at the Scarlet Forest Base Camp. This quest unlocks a special lure necessary for your pursuit: the Tuff Joint Bait, which is essential for attracting larger fish.

Where to find a Whopper in Monster Hunter Wilds

It’s important to note that Whoppers are not categorized as a distinct fish species but rather represent particularly large examples of various aquatic life. Consequently, your best chances of finding them lie in expansive bodies of water rather than the smaller streams or puddles scattered throughout the game.

The most effective location for fishing Whoppers is in Area 17 of the Scarlet Forest, specifically at the Great Lake Shore. If you already have a camp established in that vicinity, you can fast travel to it. If not, consider setting up a camp to ensure you have easy access to the Great Lake Shore. It’s advisable to rest at your camp occasionally to refresh the zone, making it more likely for Whoppers to spawn.

How to catch a Whopper in Monster Hunter Wilds

Catching a Whopper requires more finesse than standard fishing, as a minigame mechanic is introduced that tests your skills. Be aware that the fishing line can snap, leading to failure, so some practice is necessary to master the technique.

Your first task is to spot a Whopper in the water. Identify them easily due to their larger size, often indicated by fins protruding from the water’s surface. Cast your rod in their vicinity, then wiggle the lure to entice them to bite.

Once you hook a Whopper, reel it in by pulling the rod in the direction that the fish is swimming. Moving in the opposite direction can cause the line to snap, allowing the fish to escape, so be careful unless the fish swims into an obstacle. Collisions with objects can also break the line. Furthermore, when a fish jumps, ensure you move the rod in the same direction as its leap.

As the fish tires and stops moving from time to time, you will have the opportunity to reel it in. During these moments, shift the rod up and down to bring the fish closer to shore. This process may need to be repeated multiple times until the fish is exhausted.

With enough practice, you’ll gain proficiency in catching Whoppers. Pursuing these giant fish is worthwhile, as each one brings you closer to achieving the prestigious a-fish-ionado achievement for successfully catching 30 of them.
