Tragic Passing of Missouri State Football Player Todric McGee
Missouri State University mourns the loss of 21-year-old football player Todric McGee, who died on Saturday following what authorities believe to be an accidental self-inflicted gunshot at his residence. Police discovered his body during a wellness check at his home on Friday.
McGee’s head coach, Ryan Beard, emphasized the profound impact McGee made, stating in an X post: “As I sit back and reflect on the last 24 hours, the thoughts of Todric’s infectious smile and competitive spirit are the things I see the most.” He further extended condolences to McGee’s family, expressing the deep connection coaches develop with their players over time.
“You watch young people become men right in front of your eyes, and they become a part of who you are. You love these guys like your own sons. On behalf of the MoState Football Family, we send our deepest condolences to Todric’s family. We pray they find peace and know that Todric will forever be in our hearts,” Beard added.
In another heartfelt statement, Beard remarked on the shock felt within the football family: “This tragedy has shaken our football program to the core. We ask everyone to please respect the privacy of his family and our MoState football team at this time as we begin the healing process. Join us in praying for Todric and the people who loved him.” Athletic director Patrick Ransdell echoed these sentiments, affirming the program’s commitment to supporting its members during this tragic period.
McGee was a vital player for the Missouri State Bears, starting as a safety for the past two seasons and set to enter his fifth year with the team. His contributions on the field were significant, and his untimely passing has left a void in both the team and the broader community.
As friends, teammates, and family come together to honor McGee’s memory, the university community reflects on the importance of mental health and support systems for student-athletes.
