Broadway’s “Road to the Tonys” Features Tom Francis in “Sunset Boulevard”

As the Tony nominations approach, CBS Mornings has revived its series “Road to the Tonys,” which showcases some of the foremost talents on Broadway each season. On a recent episode, the program highlighted Tom Francis, who currently stars in Sunset Boulevard alongside Nicole Scherzinger.

During this segment, viewers were taken behind the scenes to follow Francis on his daily journey through New York City, which culminates in his performance of the show’s title number. In light of some audience members’ hesitations regarding the integration of contemporary technology in theater, he extended an invitation to those undecided about attending. “Come and see a show where your imagination can take you to places that you never knew that you could go to,” urged Francis, highlighting the transformative power of live performances.

Despite winning an Olivier Award for his portrayal of Joe Gillis during the West End run, Francis revealed that his path to acting was not always clear-cut. Initially, he imagined a future in farming but discovered his passion for performance during his first professional engagement. “I think when I did my first professional job, [I realized] I could do this,” he explained, reflecting on his journey into theater.

The Jamie Lloyd Company’s iteration of Sunset Boulevard, which debuted in London’s West End in fall 2023, quickly captivated audiences globally. The production garnered a remarkable eight Olivier Awards, taking home accolades for Best Revival, Best Director (Jamie Lloyd), Best Actress (Nicole Scherzinger), and Best Actor (Tom Francis) among others. Now on Broadway, the show is set to run until July 13 at the St. James Theatre.

The narrative centers on the reclusive and nostalgic movie star Norma Desmond, played by Nicole Scherzinger, who desperately longs for a return to the silver screen. Tom Francis plays a struggling screenwriter whose unmarketable scripts might provide the key to Norma’s dreams, but their intoxicating relationship spirals towards chaos. With themes of ambition and the yearning for fame, the production presents a stark examination of its characters’ desires and frustrations in a world drenched in cynicism and champagne.

Upcoming Highlights: “Floyd Collins”

Vivian Beaumont Theatre (Broadway)

Jeremy Jordan will take the stage in “Floyd Collins,” a dramatic retelling of the true story of a cave explorer from Kentucky in 1925. As Floyd Collins pursues the dream of transforming Sand Cave into a tourist destination, he finds himself trapped 200 feet underground. Isolated except for intermittent communications with the outside world, including his brother Homer, Floyd battles against his own fears as the rescue efforts above evolve into a sensational media spectacle.
