Tony Gilroy’s Transition: From Star Wars to New Horizons

Tony Gilroy has significantly influenced the Star Wars saga, especially with his work on Andor. As Season 2 prepares to debut on Disney+, it marks not only a continuation of the story leading to Rogue One but also the conclusion of Gilroy’s contribution to this beloved franchise.

After a decade-long involvement with Star Wars, including a substantial role in shaping the canon through Rogue One, Gilroy has expressed his desire to pursue new creative opportunities. While a possibility exists for him to revisit the iconic Bourne series, he seems keen on exploring different projects. In a conversation with MovieWeb’s George Edelman, Gilroy remarked:

“I’ve been on Star Wars for sort of 10 years, if you include Rogue One. I mean, I brought 24 hours of new canon, I’ve been doing it for five or six years, I kind of feel like, I’m topped out. I want to go direct a movie. I want to do something else.” He elaborated on the Bourne franchise, sharing his thoughts on its tumultuous history. “The Bourne situation has been the most shambolic success in the history of Hollywood. That thing’s just stumbled forward into success. I don’t know what they’re doing right now. I can’t see it. I don’t know what the scenario would be that would lead me back to that either. Yeah, I’d like to go try something different, maybe.”

Tony Gilroy’s Journey with the Bourne Franchise

The Bourne series has captivated audiences with thrilling action sequences and high-stakes espionage. However, Gilroy’s directorial venture with The Bourne Legacy, featuring Jeremy Renner, did not unfold as he envisioned. In 2023, he reflected on his intentions for the film: “Look, man, I tried to give them a Marvel Universe with The Bourne Legacy, and they didn’t want to take it. I mean, honestly, that was the whole goal of that, to open it up… The history of Bourne is one of the most shambolic success stories of all time.” He noted that while the film aimed to expand the universe, internal strife affected its realization.

As Gilroy steps away from the Star Wars saga, fans are gearing up for the emotional final season of Andor. This series promises to provide a rich and expansive narrative as it leads viewers back into the life of Cassian Andor, ultimately culminating in his fate as portrayed in Rogue One.
