NEW YORK (AP) — The executive producer of “60 Minutes” announced on Tuesday his decision to step down from his role, citing the evolving dynamics that would prevent him from leading the program as he has traditionally done.
In a communication to the show’s staff, Bill Owens conveyed his belief that he could no longer make decisions that align with the best interests of the audience.
“After vigorously defending this program and our values from all fronts, I am choosing to step aside to allow the show to progress,” he stated in a memo that was initially reported by The New York Times.
“60 Minutes” has faced criticism from former President Donald Trump, who has taken legal action against the network claiming $20 billion in damages over the editing of an interview with Kamala Harris last fall. In light of this, CBS management has been exploring a potential settlement with Trump, a move that Owens and several colleagues on the show have opposed.
