Germany’s Military Service Debate Intensifies Amid Growing Defense Needs

In light of escalating defense requirements, a prominent German military leader has asserted the necessity for a fresh approach to military service in Germany. Lieutenant General Harald Gante, addressing the media, emphasized that the Bundeswehr, the German armed forces, cannot adequately meet its operational demands through a purely volunteer-based force.

Gante articulated that the multitude of responsibilities pertaining to national security and collective defense necessitate a significant increase in personnel, which can realistically be achieved by reinstating conscription. He underscored that the mission at hand cannot be accomplished without a larger, more robust military presence.

The general raised concerns regarding the geopolitical landscape, particularly the need for Germany to be prepared to counter potential threats from Russia. He remarked, “There should be no false illusions,” suggesting that if Russia perceives an opportunity to regain influence reminiscent of the Soviet era, it could act on that perception.

Gante’s call for action is framed within the context of credible deterrence, which he believes is essential to preventing aggressive moves by external powers. The Bundeswehr is currently in a state of anticipation regarding the incoming German government’s stance on the potential reintroduction of military conscription, which had been suspended in 2011.

As part of ongoing efforts to expand military capability, the army is looking to add 2,500 new troops this year. However, Gante pointed out critical shortcomings in military infrastructure that need to be addressed to support this growth. He stated, “The problem is not the trainers we have today, but the problem is the infrastructure.”

He elaborated that without adequate facilities—such as barracks and suitable buildings to accommodate soldiers—the recruitment process would face significant hurdles. Gante’s statements reflect a growing recognition within the German military establishment of the urgent need to reevaluate current strategies and bolster both human and physical resources to safeguard national interests.
