A tragic incident unfolded on Friday morning when a Toronto Hydro employee lost his life following an accident in an electrical vault located along the city’s harbourfront. This has been described by utility officials as a “tragic workplace accident.”
In a statement, Toronto Hydro spokesperson Lauren Harris expressed the company’s sorrow over the situation, saying, “We’re deeply saddened to share that this incident resulted in a loss of life.” She highlighted the organization’s commitment to providing support to the worker’s family and the employees during this challenging time.
Emergency responders were alerted to the incident at 1:54 a.m. along Queens Quay near Rees Street. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered the injured worker within the hydro vault. Due to the circumstances, they had to cut off power to the vault before they could safely extract the worker.
Despite being rushed to the hospital, the individual, reported to be in his 30s, later succumbed to his injuries. The event has left the community and colleagues at Toronto Hydro in shock.
As a result of the incident, Toronto Hydro’s outage map indicated that 792 customers in the vicinity are currently experiencing power outages. Harris assured that efforts are underway to restore power to affected areas “as soon as possible.”
This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding workplace safety within the utilities sector, emphasizing the need for stringent safety protocols to protect employees in hazardous environments.
