Trader Joe’s Issues Recall for Sparkling Water Bottles
If you’ve recently bought sparkling water from Trader Joe’s, it’s important to check your inventory.
On March 13, Trader Joe’s announced a recall affecting specific batches of Gerolsteiner Sparkling Natural Mineral Water, due to concerns about potential cracks or damage in the bottles.
As reported by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the recall impacts approximately 61,500 bottles, specifically the 750 mL size.
The recall was triggered when the supplier of the German-manufactured sparkling water notified Trader Joe’s that certain lot codes may have bottles that are either damaged or could crack easily. The two affected lot codes are 2024/28/11 24 2027/19/12 and 2024/271/11 24 2027/18/12. Customers can find these codes printed on the bottle labels to determine if they need to take any action.
While a recall of this nature may seem unusual, it is significant given that these bottles are made from glass, which poses a clear risk of injury if shattered.
Trader Joe’s confirms that these bottles were sold between December 27, 2024, and January 28, 2025, across 12 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas. They were priced around $3 each, according to the CPSC.
Fortunately, so far, there have been no reports of injuries or instances of broken bottles from customers. Trader Joe’s has acknowledged that this concern was identified through investigations into bottle integrity during production and affects roughly 1% of the products in the specified lot codes.
If you have one of the affected bottles, Trader Joe’s advises that you do not consume the water. Instead, you should safely dispose of it or bring it to a Trader Joe’s location for a full refund.
The CPSC further clarifies that consumers are not required to present proof of purchase to receive a refund, but bringing the recalled bottle back will facilitate the process, whether in cash or store credit. If you plan to return the bottle, please ensure to handle it carefully and consider picking up a snack while you’re at the store.
