Duke Energy to Transport Large Transformer to McGuire Nuclear Plant
Duke Energy has scheduled the transportation of a significant transformer from Charlotte to the McGuire Nuclear Plant along NC 73 Highway on April 3.
Measuring 158 feet in length, over 16 feet in height, nearly 24 feet in width, and weighing in at an impressive 460,496 pounds, this transformer will enter Lincoln County from Gaston County in the early hours, specifically between 1 and 2 a.m. It is anticipated to arrive at its designated location on Eastlake Lane by around 5 a.m.
To ensure public awareness and safety, Lincoln County Emergency Management plans to deploy message boards along NC Highway 73 starting April 1, notifying drivers of potential travel disruptions during the transport process.

In a coordinated effort, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office will work with the Lincoln County Communications Center to issue reverse 911 calls to residents in the Denver area on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, informing them of the upcoming transport.
The route for this transformer will see it traveling north on New Highway 16 from the Gaston County line before proceeding eastward on Highway 73. During the transport, thoroughfares will be closed off from Mecklenburg County at Club Drive until the oversized vehicle has turned onto Eastlake Lane.
Traffic in Lincoln County is expected to be affected from 1 to 5 a.m., prompting local officials to take proactive measures to inform and manage the public during this critical time.
