Transa: A Revolutionary Album Amidst Rising Anti-Trans Sentiment
When Red Hot producer Dust Reid and artist Massima Bell embarked on the journey of creating the ambitious album Transa (styled TRAИƧA) in 2021, they likely did not foresee that its release in November 2024 would align with the reelection of Donald Trump. This political backdrop is coupled with an alarming surge in anti-trans policies and rhetoric evident in contemporary discourse. The album, now featuring over 100 participating artists—including Adrianne Lenker, André 3000, Anohni, Hunter Schafer, Perfume Genius, and Sade Adu—serves as a resonant act of defiance. It elevates the artistic contributions of trans, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming musicians, celebrating their creativity and resilience over generations.
This week, Vogue conducted an interview with Bell, a figure known for her appearance in Nan Goldin’s Gucci campaign, discussing the significance of releasing Transa on the cusp of a renewed Trump presidency. She highlighted the importance of honoring Sophie’s legacy, the strength of Sade’s support for her transgender son, and the ambition to create art that fosters a sense of belonging for trans individuals.
Vogue: How does it feel to officially have the album out in the world?
Massima Bell: It’s incredibly beautiful. For me, this project has been a heartfelt tribute to the trans individuals in my life and beyond. It’s been a meaningful refuge for many, which makes it all the more special and precious.
Does the release of the album feel different than you’d expected?
We initiated this project in 2021, a time preceding the increasing anti-trans hostility and legislative efforts observed in the US. The vision behind the project was not to react to that environment but rather to highlight love and celebrate the myriad contributions of the trans community. Given the current climate and uncertainties about the future, the reception of this album indicates its necessity in today’s world. Although we did not foresee this timing, it resonates profoundly with what people need right now. I am genuinely thankful to have brought this to fruition with Red Hot, which approaches its initiatives with a boldness that contrasts with how many charity projects have traditionally functioned.
