Vaim, the latest novel by acclaimed author Jon Fosse, is set to debut on October 7, marking his first new release following his recognition with the 2023 Nobel Prize in Literature. This novel, translated by Damion Searls, is the inaugural piece in a triptych that takes place in the fictional fishing village of Vaim in Norway. The narrative explores the lives of solitary fishermen, their past romances, animal companions, and the enduring significance of boats, as highlighted in the publisher’s announcement. Transit Books has confirmed a robust print run of 20,000 copies for the hardcover edition.
The rights for this triptych were obtained by Transit copublishers Adam Levy and Ashley Nelson Levy through a four-book agreement that also includes Fosse’s Dog Stories. This collection features three novellas centered around canine protagonists and has not been published in English before. The transaction was facilitated by Markus Hoffmann of Regal Hoffmann & Associates, representing the Winje Agency. Additionally, Jacque Testard at Fitzcarraldo has secured the rights for the United Kingdom.
Transit has previously brought to English-speaking audiences Fosse’s renowned work, Septology, which was shortlisted for the International Booker Prize. This extensive narrative unfolds across three volumes: The Other Name (2020), I Is Another (2021), and A New Name (2022). Furthermore, Transit published Fosse’s 2023 novel A Shining along with his Nobel Prize lecture, all translated by Searls. Earlier works by Fosse have also reached U.S. readers thanks to Dalkey Archive Press.
