Moment of Silence for Jimmy Carter at NFL Game
In Landover, Maryland, a moment of silence was observed ahead of the Atlanta Falcons’ game against the Washington Commanders on Sunday evening. This tribute occurred shortly after the passing of former President Jimmy Carter, who died at the age of 100 in Plains, Georgia.
Carter, a prominent figure in American history, was not only a Georgia native but also served as the 39th president from 1977 to 1981. His leadership came from a city just a short distance from where the game was held, underscoring his connection to the region. In a historic precedent, he was the first U.S. president to host the NFL Super Bowl champions at the White House, welcoming the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1980.
Arthur Blank, the owner of the Falcons, expressed his sorrow in a statement shared with the media before the game commenced. He highlighted Carter’s legacy as “a great American, a proud Georgian, and an inspirational global humanitarian,” reflecting on their close friendship.
Blank remembered how Carter embodied civic responsibility and strived to inspire change in others. “President Carter’s kind and uniting spirit touched so many lives. He was a man of deep faith, and did everything with principle and grace, doing things the right way for the right reasons,” he remarked, recalling their meeting at The Home Depot.
