Concerns Rise Over Pete Hegseth’s Nomination as Defense Secretary
While Pete Hegseth may express assurance regarding his prospects for becoming defense secretary, skepticism is mounting among his peers and political commentators.
Comedian Ronny Chieng, on Wednesday’s episode of “The Daily Show,” highlighted reports that an increasing number of senators are showing reluctance to back Hegseth’s nomination. He quipped that Donald Trump appears to be constructing his administration “the same way that billionaire built the Titanic submarine, because it’s imploding immediately.”
This comment references the tragic incident involving OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush and four passengers who lost their lives in June 2023 during an expedition to explore the Titanic wreckage, an event that garnered significant media attention.
Chieng suggested that uncertainty surrounding Hegseth’s nomination would be more impactful “if he wasn’t s–t-faced right now.” He further remarked that if Hegseth does not receive the necessary confirmation, it would lead to serious questions about Trump’s strategy of appointing individuals deemed the “most unemployable people on earth” to the most challenging roles.
The comedian expressed a degree of sympathy for Hegseth, stating that he had previously enjoyed a comfortable career with Fox News and other ventures. “He had it made,” Chieng noted, “but then Trump comes along and offers him a job, and now his life is kind of f–ked up.”
Speaking to Megyn Kelly earlier that same day, Hegseth dismissed concerns about being overshadowed by potential competitors like Ron DeSantis. “Listen, it’s all the president’s choice. I spoke to the president this morning. He said, ‘I’m his guy,’” Hegseth asserted during “The Megyn Kelly Show” podcast.
He maintained a level of confidentiality regarding his discussions with Trump: “I’m not going to give any other information from my conversations with the president. I believe what he shares with me needs to stay in confidence. But things were addressed, and he said, ‘You’re my guy.’”
