Reports indicate that the Trump administration is contemplating a significant shift regarding the U.S. Postal Service (USPS), an independent federal entity. Sources have revealed to CBS News that there is a possibility of transferring control of the USPS to the Commerce Department.
The Commerce Department is currently led by Howard Lutnick, a billionaire with close ties to Trump. Should this transfer occur, it is expected to be enacted through an executive order, according to the sources.
This potential move was first reported by the Washington Post. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, a key figure and fundraiser for Trump who was appointed during the former president’s first term, recently announced his resignation, although he has not specified a timeline for his departure.
DeJoy initially proposed a plan in 2021 aimed at achieving profitability for the USPS by fiscal year 2024. However, contrary to expectations, the agency has recorded two consecutive years of widening financial losses.
The United States Postal Service was founded in 1775, with Benjamin Franklin as its inaugural postmaster general. As an independent agency, the USPS operates under the oversight of the Board of Governors, which includes both the postmaster general and a deputy postmaster general.
