In a notable political move, President-elect Donald Trump has appointed Alina Habba, one of his defense attorneys involved in the hush money case in New York, as his counselor. This decision signals a continuation of Habba’s close professional relationship with Trump, a dynamic that has been evident since she took on the role of his legal spokesperson earlier this year.

Habba, who is 40 years old, has been a constant presence at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s Florida resort, since the recent election. In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump expressed his appreciation for Habba’s loyalty and resilience, emphasizing her deep understanding of what he terms the “Weaponization of the ‘Injustice’ System.” Trump’s remarks highlight the trust he places in Habba amidst ongoing legal challenges.

The appointment comes on the heels of Trump making history as the first former U.S. president to be convicted of felony crimes. A New York jury found him guilty on all counts related to a scheme aimed at influencing the 2016 presidential election through payments to a pornographic actress who alleged they had an affair.

During his first term, Trump’s counselor role was occupied by Kellyanne Conway, a prominent Republican strategist. Habba’s cultural background is notable as well; she is of Iraqi descent and belongs to the Chaldean community, the largest Christian population in Iraq, which is part of the Catholic Church’s Eastern rites.

In addition to her legal duties, Habba actively participated in Trump’s campaign efforts, including speaking at a rally held at Madison Square Garden in late October. Her engagement on the campaign trail further cements her status as a trusted ally of the president-elect.

Beyond Habba’s appointment, Trump has announced the return of former staff member Michael Anton as director of policy planning at the State Department. Anton previously served as spokesman for the National Security Council from 2017 to 2018. Furthermore, Trump is set to appoint Michael Needham, a former chief of staff to Senator Marco Rubio, as counselor for the State Department, following Rubio’s selection as the president-elect’s next secretary of state.
