Elon Musk is reportedly set to exit his role within the Trump administration in the coming months, as disclosed by President Donald Trump during a recent Cabinet meeting, according to NBC News.
A government official informed NBC that Musk, who is involved with the DOGE initiative focused on reducing federal expenditures, would complete his term as a special government employee (SGE) after reaching the designated limit of 130 workdays. Musk’s term began on January 20, which means he will fulfill this short-term role by the end of May.
Earlier reports from Politico indicated that Musk’s departure from the Trump administration is imminent.
In response to these reports, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt dismissed them as “garbage” in a tweet, asserting that both Musk and Trump had confirmed that Musk would leave government service only after his significant work with DOGE concludes.
Trump expressed appreciation for Musk’s contributions, noting, “I think he’s been amazing, but I also think he’s got a big company to run… And at some point, he’s going to be going back. He wants to.” He added, “I’d keep him as long as I could keep him.”

In an interview with Fox Business on March 10, Musk was asked whether he would extend his tenure for another year. He responded affirmatively, indicating, “Yeah, I think so.”
Musk is notable for being one of the most significant financial supporters of Trump’s 2024 election campaign. However, in a recent political development, the conservative candidate Brad Schimel, who received financial backing from Musk and Trump, lost his bid for a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
