In a potential shift within his administration, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly contemplating a change in his choice for Secretary of Defense, considering Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as a possible replacement for Pete Hegseth, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal. The discussions surrounding Hegseth’s nomination face challenges on Capitol Hill, primarily due to concerns regarding his personal and professional history, leading many within Trump’s circle to believe that Hegseth’s confirmation could be jeopardized amidst increasing scrutiny.
Hegseth, a combat veteran and former host on Fox News, would require the backing of Senate Republicans for his confirmation. The pressure surrounding his nomination underscores the rigorous process candidates for high-profile positions face when their pasts come under examination.
As of now, responses from both the Trump transition office and DeSantis’ office regarding this development have not been forthcoming.
The pressure is mounting on Trump’s administration as two of his appointees for significant roles have already withdrawn their names from consideration. Chad Chronister, who was nominated to oversee the Drug Enforcement Administration, stepped back from his candidacy just as former Representative Matt Gaetz removed himself from consideration for the attorney general post amid serious allegations related to an underage individual.
DeSantis, who recently ended his pursuit for the Republican presidential nomination against Trump, had been included in earlier discussions as a suitable candidate for the defense secretary position before Trump initially opted for Hegseth. Notably, DeSantis has military experience, having served in the Navy’s Judge Advocate General’s Corps from 2004 to 2010.
Should Hegseth’s nomination falter, Trump has the option to consider other candidates beyond DeSantis for the role, indicating the fluidity of the situation as the incoming administration prepares for its transition.
