In the early stages of Donald Trump’s second term, he has made an eyebrow-raising comment hinting at interest in a role beyond that of president.
During a recent press interaction, a reporter inquired about who should succeed Pope Francis. Trump’s response leaned towards humor, aligning with his characteristic style.
“I’d like to be pope,” Trump quipped. “That’d be my No. 1 choice.”
Following this lighthearted declaration, Trump offered a more considerate suggestion for the papacy.
“I don’t have a preference. I might say we have a cardinal that happens to be out of a place called New York who is very good,” he stated, referencing Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the archbishop of New York.

While it seems the president’s comment was made in jest, his other unconventional proposals—such as making Canada the 51st state and taking control of Greenland—suggest a more serious undertone that raises concerns. Additionally, he has not definitively ruled out the prospect of seeking a third term.
Unsurprisingly, many observers have expressed hope that the idea of a “Pope Donald” remains a far-fetched concept.
