Trump Nominates Callista Gingrich as Ambassador to Switzerland
President-elect Donald Trump has announced his intention to nominate Callista Gingrich for the position of U.S. ambassador to Switzerland. Gingrich, who is married to former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, previously served as U.S. ambassador to the Holy See during Trump’s first term. This nomination is part of a broader announcement where several candidates have been proposed for ambassadorial roles in the new administration.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump praised Gingrich’s past work, highlighting her efforts in promoting international religious freedom, combating human trafficking, and humanitarian outreach during her previous ambassadorial tenure. “Happily married to the Great Newt Gingrich, Callista previously served, with distinction, as my Ambassador to the Holy See,” he stated. He also noted her academic achievements, mentioning her graduation with honors from Luther College in 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts in Music.
Additional Nominations Announced
Alongside Gingrich, Trump has nominated Mauricio Claver-Carone as the U.S. special envoy for Latin America. This role differs from traditional ambassadorships, being more focused on specific missions over a shorter duration. In the context of persistent challenges at the U.S. southern border, Trump emphasized the need for order and protection of American interests in his statement about Claver-Carone’s nomination.
Trump described Claver-Carone as knowledgeable about the region and its issues, including illegal mass migration and the fentanyl crisis, stating, “As the State Department’s Special Envoy, Mauricio will work tirelessly to protect the American People.”
The President-elect also announced Ken Howery, co-founder of PayPal, as the nominee for U.S. ambassador to Denmark. Howery has prior experience serving as U.S. ambassador to Sweden, where Trump recognized his accomplishments as “brilliant.” Trump acknowledged Howery’s entrepreneurial background and its relevance to international diplomacy, particularly in the context of national security and global representation.
These nominations, including those of Gingrich, Claver-Carone, and Howery, are part of Trump’s efforts to assemble a cabinet that aligns with his administration’s objectives and addresses pressing global issues. As with all such appointments, these nominees will require confirmation from the U.S. Senate.
