WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President-elect Donald Trump announced on Sunday his intention to release classified documents connected to the assassinations of prominent figures including U.S. President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr.
As Trump prepares to return to the White House, he reiterated a campaign commitment to make public classified intelligence and law enforcement files related to JFK’s 1963 assassination. His promise harks back to similar vows made during his previous administration from 2017 to 2021.
During his earlier term, Trump did release some records concerning JFK’s assassination; however, he ultimately withheld a considerable number of documents due to appeals from the Central Intelligence Agency and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, citing national security concerns.
“In the coming days, we are going to make public remaining records related to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, his brother Robert Kennedy, as well as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other topics of great public interest,” Trump stated at a rally in Washington, just before his inauguration for a second, non-consecutive term.
While Trump confirmed the release of certain documents, he did not clarify which specific records would be made public, nor did he commit to a comprehensive declassification of all files. Both King and Robert Kennedy were assassinated in 1968.
The assassination of JFK remains a point of intense speculation and fascination in American society. Although government investigations have characterized Lee Harvey Oswald as the lone gunman, a substantial portion of the public continues to entertain theories of a broader conspiracy surrounding the event, as reflected in various opinion polls.
Adding a personal perspective to the discussion, Trump’s nominee for health and human services secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is the son of Robert Kennedy and the nephew of JFK, has expressed his belief that the CIA may have played a role in his uncle’s assassination, a claim the agency has categorically rejected as unfounded.
Furthermore, Kennedy Jr. has posited that his father’s assassination involved multiple gunmen, a notion that stands in stark contrast to official explanations. The complex web of narratives surrounding these historical events continues to generate debate and intrigue.
