Trump Misses March Madness Bracket Deadline, Contemplates Late Entry
President Donald Trump has not yet participated in filling out a March Madness bracket, despite the excitement surrounding the NCAA Tournament. During a press interaction outside the White House, he acknowledged this when asked about his bracket submissions.
“I didn’t. I should have. Have there been upsets? A couple, right?” Trump remarked, indicating his missed opportunity to engage with the annual tradition.
He hinted at the possibility of submitting a bracket retroactively, which would allow him to bypass the damaging results that have already impacted many participants this year.
As of the early first-round games on Friday, the chances of maintaining a perfect bracket had severely diminished. According to the NCAA, only about 0.0044% of the 34 million brackets filled out were still intact.
Impact of Recent Games on Bracket Results
ESPN’s bracket tracker reported that fewer than 1,100 perfect brackets remained from a total of 24 million, significantly affected by recent games, including Ole Miss’s victory over North Carolina. That game not only reduced the number of perfect brackets on ESPN but also led to a drastic decrease in Yahoo Sports’ Men’s Bracket Mayhem, where only 81 unspoiled brackets remained.
Similarly, CBS Sports reported that their perfect bracket count plummeted to 0.005% following the same match outcome. Notably, over 85% of the brackets submitted on Yahoo had predicted Clemson to advance, but the Tigers’ unexpected defeat to McNeese State further contributed to the bracket breakdown, resulting in 6.6 million ESPN brackets being eliminated.
Bracket Busters and Unexpected Outcomes
ESPN designated Creighton as a significant bracket buster after their commanding 89-75 victory against Louisville, which led to the loss of over 13 million brackets. In a remarkable turn, ESPN reported that there were 30 brackets where every single selection was incorrect.
The unpredictable nature of this year’s tournament underscores the challenges fans face in forecasting outcomes, making it a thrilling yet tumultuous experience.
Looking Ahead
While Trump may have missed the March Madness deadline, his casual remarks emphasize the cultural significance of this sporting event, where brackets serve as a source of excitement and camaraderie among fans nationwide. As upsets continue to unfold, participants are left to grapple with the unpredictability of college basketball.
