Trump’s Incoming Staff Waits at the Kennedy Center

On Inauguration Day, the Kennedy Center transformed into a makeshift waiting area as newly appointed staffers for President Trump anticipated their transition to the White House.

Early on that Monday, while Joe Biden remained in office, the incoming team began to assemble at the celebrated Washington landmark, famed for its cultural performances, including orchestras and ballets.

Arriving via ride-share services, the first aide associated with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement made an appearance a full three hours ahead of the scheduled noon swearing-in ceremony.

Secret Service agents were on hand to screen IDs and issue temporary visitor passes. Some staff members donned presidential lanyards, while one individual humorously showcased a lanyard from his high school days.

The staff mingled with acquaintances from Trump’s previous term while also engaging with new colleagues unfamiliar with the historic setting of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. The atmosphere was lively as they chatted on the red carpet in the Hall of States, surrounded by large-scale photographs of John F. Kennedy and significant moments from his presidency.

One staff member reflected on a trip to Ireland with Trump during his first term while pointing at a prominent photo of Kennedy delivering a speech there. Meanwhile, a National Security Council staffer enjoyed a large Starbucks coffee, and a communications aide munched on a breakfast sandwich. Light-hearted comments about first-day attire circulated, with a mix of business suits and some opting for comfortable Lululemon trousers.

As the wait continued, staffers occasionally glanced at their watches and phones. At around 11:30 a.m., they began streaming the inaugural ceremony on various devices. With only moments remaining, an aide remarked, “They’ve got to wrap it up — they’ve got seven minutes, according to the Constitution,” while watching an introductory speaker on the screen.

As noon approached, one staff member inquired, “We going to leave?” to which another replied, “Soon as he puts his hand on the Bible.” Ultimately, at precisely 12:01 p.m., Trump took the oath of office — notably without touching the Bible. In response, staffers quickly gathered their belongings, including coats and bags, and boarded mini buses, setting off for their new offices at the White House.
