Trump vs. Joker: Who Was More Destructive?

Welcome to another episode in our unique series exploring the parallels between iconic comic book villains and some of the most controversial figures in politics today.

This time, it’s no surprise we’re focusing on the Joker, arguably one of the most recognized and frequently discussed villains in pop culture. Renowned actor Mark Hamill has drawn attention to the parallels between the Joker and certain political figures, particularly highlighting their similar unpredictability and moral ambiguity.

Recall that during Trump’s first contentious inauguration, a memorable comic panel was circulated that illustrated a stark contrast: even the Joker had some semblance of a moral compass when juxtaposed against the then-president.

This notable scene is from the comic Batman and Captain America, where the Joker unwittingly collaborates with the notorious Red Skull. Upon realizing Skull’s Nazi associations, the Joker displays a moment of moral clarity, expressing his disdain for such ideologies. Eventually, in an act of defiance, he attempts to thwart Skull’s plans, demonstrating a level of integrity that contrasts sharply with the actions of some political leaders.

The sheer outrageousness of the Joker’s character also stands against the backdrop of current political discourse. His outright refusal to align with extremist ideologies is a sharp critique of political figures who have, at times, appeared to legitimize hate groups. For instance, Trump’s associations and comments regarding specific extremist factions have drawn widespread criticism.

While the Joker’s antics are often brutal and morally reprehensible, his actions sometimes reveal a twisted loyalty to his own chaotic code. In one instance from A Death in the Family, faced with financial duress, he considers selling a missile to terrorists but instead chooses to sabotage them; a stark contrast to political decisions that have left many feeling abandoned and exploited, as when Trump provided unregulated support to authoritarian figures.

This narrative of the Joker highlights an odd sense of loyalty even within his villainy, reflecting a departure from the evasive tactics often seen in modern political arenas. When given the chance to betray broader societal values, he chooses a path of chaotic deceit rather than one of calculated malice directed solely at specific marginalized groups.

Despite the Joker’s capacity for destruction, his metaphorical reach pales in comparison to political actions that have resulted in widespread suffering. Various estimates suggest that ill-informed policies during the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to a staggering number of unnecessary deaths, significantly influenced by misinformation propagated by certain leaders.

Moreover, Trump’s administration is criticized for taking actions that intertwined with mass fatality—whether through immigration policies or other morally questionable choices. This careful examination suggests that, while fiction may portray the Joker as a formidable threat, real-world consequences stemming from political power can be far more devastating.

Across history, the specter of political figures involved in mass violence persists. From the repercussions of the Vietnam War to the ongoing humanitarian crises driven by certain policies, it becomes evident that fiction frequently serves as a reflection of harsh realities.

While we can readily dismiss fictional characters for their antics, with the Joker standing out for his chaotic nature, it’s crucial to engage with the implications of real-world leadership failures. There exists a profound difference between fictional narratives of evil and the tangible heartbreak caused by political decisions. However, comic relief can still emerge even in the darkest of narratives, as the Joker’s flamboyant caricature provides a certain levity missing in our contemporary political discourse.
