US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem was the victim of a purse theft while dining in a restaurant in downtown Washington, D.C., on Sunday evening, as confirmed by two sources from law enforcement to CNBC.
Noem’s purse was reported to have contained approximately $3,000 in cash, which she had taken out to treat her family to dinner, as well as Easter gifts and activities, according to a spokesperson from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Monday.
The purse also held Noem’s passport, makeup, blank checks, her driver’s license, keys, and medication, as reported by CNN, the outlet that first broke the news of the theft.
The U.S. Secret Service is currently examining security footage that features an unidentified white male wearing a medical mask who allegedly snatched the bag, CNN stated.
During the White House Easter Egg Roll the following morning, Noem commented on the incident, noting that it has “not resolved yet.”
She mentioned to NBC News that while the Secret Service is informed of the situation, she has yet to have a conversation with them regarding the theft.
A spokesperson for the Secret Service confirmed that the agency is still in the process of gathering details surrounding the incident.
