The Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, recently defended the Trump administration for its utilization of the messaging app Signal while also criticizing officials from the Biden administration for engaging in similar practices during an interview on Friday.
“The use of end-to-end encrypted applications such as Signal is not only permitted under current guidelines, but it also saw extensive usage during the Biden administration,” Gabbard stated during her appearance on Fox & Friends.
She emphasized that Signal is “the most secure form of communication” as long as it’s not employed for classified discussions. Gabbard claimed to have heard from credible sources that officials from the Biden administration, including former National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and Antony Blinken, frequently used the app for detailed communications.
“This is intriguing,” she remarked, noting that Democrats involved in the committee seemed to disregard this information, despite being aware of it.
Gabbard’s remarks follow a wave of Signal-associated leaks and mishaps that have surfaced recently.
The incident dubbed “Signalgate” came to light last month when Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, was unintentionally included in a group chat involving 17 senior members of the Trump administration—including Vice President JD Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Gabbard herself—who shared sensitive information about potential missile strikes in Yemen.
In the following weeks, it was revealed that Hegseth also disclosed further details about these operations to his family and legal counsel through another secret group chat on the app, circumventing Pentagon security protocols to install Signal on his work computer.
“It’s simply practical,” Gabbard noted regarding the White House’s ongoing use of Signal. “We need a secure method of communication, and this is the best option available. It needs to be used judiciously, but we require alternatives.”
