Charges Filed Following Deadly Brawl at Ely State Prison
A total of twenty individuals have been charged in relation to a violent altercation at Ely State Prison in Nevada that resulted in the deaths of three inmates and injuries to five others. The final arrest was made on March 5, as confirmed by Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford.
Those charged face numerous allegations, including three counts of first-degree murder, each associated with the use of a deadly weapon for the purpose of promoting or assisting a criminal gang, as well as five counts of attempted murder under similar conditions.

The incident, which occurred on July 30, 2024, led to the deaths of Anthony Williams, aged 41; Connor Brown, 22; and 43-year-old Zackaria Luz. Their deaths have raised serious concerns regarding safety protocols within the facility.
One notable individual charged in connection with the brawl, Andrew Emerich, was apprehended in Reno in January, approximately fourteen weeks after his release from the same prison. This highlights ongoing issues related to recidivism and the challenges of managing inmates after their release.
Attorney General Ford emphasized the determination of the authorities to seek justice, stating, “The pursuit of justice does not stop at the prison gates, and those responsible for the deaths of the three inmates at Ely State Prison will be held accountable.” He reiterated the commitment to combating violence and misconduct within Nevada’s correctional system, pledging that these issues will be met with resolute legal action.
Ely State Prison is designated as the maximum-security facility for Nevada, with a capacity of 1,183 inmates. Currently, it is staffed by around 400 personnel. The facility has faced scrutiny over its conditions; in December 2022, a hunger strike staged by several inmates drew attention to issues such as perceived unsafe living conditions and insufficient food provisions.
The incidents at Ely highlight ongoing discussions about prison safety and inmate treatment, raising questions about the effectiveness of management and oversight within correctional institutions in the state.
