Twinkle Khanna, known for her former career as a Bollywood actress, has transitioned into a prominent author and film producer, recently discussing her unique upbringing, her move to London, and her educational pursuits at 49.
Twinkle Khanna’s Path: From Bollywood to Academia
Twinkle Khanna made her debut in the film industry with the movie Barsaat in 1995 and went on to appear in several films, including Mela, Joru Ka Ghulam, and Baadshah. However, she eventually opted to leave acting behind and has successfully established herself as an author and film producer. Recently, she expressed appreciation for her husband, Akshay Kumar, who supported her decision to move to London with their daughter, Nitara. While she was resolved to make the move independently, she acknowledged that his approval made the process less complicated.
During a recent speaking engagement hosted by FICCI FLO, Twinkle shared insights into her nontraditional upbringing, highlighting a family environment where seeking permission was not often practiced. She reflected on Akshay’s supportive nature, expressing her gratitude for his willingness to embrace the move. “Even if he wasn’t fine with it, I would have done it anyway,” she commented, admitting that the transition would have posed greater challenges without his backing.
Twinkle’s life story deviates from the typical narrative. Initially aiming for a career as a chartered accountant after finishing high school, her parents—renowned actors Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia—motivated her to explore the film industry. After departing from her acting career, she discovered a passion for writing and academia, charting a different course for her future.
In a noteworthy turn of events in 2024, Twinkle Khanna returned to education full-time, making headlines for her commitment to learning. Having explored online courses during the pandemic, she achieved a master’s degree from Goldsmiths, University of London, graduating in January. Following her accomplishment, Akshay Kumar publicly celebrated her achievements on Instagram, commending her ability to juggle her studies, career, and family responsibilities.
Last seen on-screen in Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega in 2001, Twinkle has since flourished beyond her acting roots. As a producer, she was involved in the acclaimed film Pad Man in 2018, and as an author, she has written several bestsellers including Mrs. Funnybones, The Legend of Lakshmi Prasad, and Pyjamas Are Forgiving. Her diverse career path continues to inspire many, showcasing her ability to reinvent herself throughout various stages of life.
