On January 19, Michelle “Paulene” Abeyta, a resident of To’hajiilee and newly elected representative of a New Mexico House district, made a significant effort to address water quality issues in her community by transporting 50 gallons of drinking water from Albuquerque to her home. This area, approximately 30 miles west of the city, has faced persistent water challenges.
While Abeyta has access to running water, she reports concerns about its quality, a sentiment echoed by many residents in her district. Abeyta, who is Navajo and a Democrat, won her election in November and will officially take her oath as a lawmaker on Tuesday.
She highlighted troubling images in the media showing discolored water in her district, which encompasses several Navajo Nation chapters along with the pueblos of Laguna, Acoma, and parts of Isleta. “I understand that struggle,” Abeyta said, reflecting the hardships faced by her constituents.
This session of the New Mexico Legislature begins with an influx of new lawmakers; 28 representatives will be joining the assembly when the 60-day session kicks off. Although many of these legislators are transitioning from previous positions, the change still signifies a notable alteration in the legislative landscape. Among them, there is a significant presence of women, with Abeyta being one of 60 females elected to this newly female-majority body of 112 members.
House Speaker Javier Martínez emphasized the dual nature of this shift, acknowledging both the loss of institutional knowledge due to the large number of newcomers and the potential for fresh perspectives. He stated, “On the flip side, the opportunity is that you are getting new energy; you’re getting fresh ideas; you’re getting new blood, and I also believe that that’s a tremendous asset.”
Eager about her new role, Abeyta plans to focus on enhancing resources for families, particularly those grappling with substance abuse issues. As a caregiver of four children, she feels the weight of this responsibility and hopes to make meaningful changes through her legislative work.
In the Democratic primary last year, Abeyta successfully ousted incumbent Harry Garcia despite his significant fundraising advantage, demonstrating her commitment to grassroots campaigning and her thorough understanding of the region’s challenges.
Another new legislator, Anita Gonzales, proudly represents San Miguel County and will take her seat in House District 70. Her campaign, rooted in her local heritage, focused on her connections to the community and her legislative priorities amid facing a more conservative opponent.
Both Gonzales and Abeyta are part of a historic shift that has resulted in a majority of women legislating in New Mexico, although the Senate still lacks similar representation. Their elections underscore the dynamic changes occurring in state politics.
Incoming Representative Elaine Sena Cortez, who is also joining the legislature, noted the challenge posed by such a large group of newcomers, but expressed optimism about the potential for innovation. She highlighted her intent to bring a conservative perspective and proposed a bill to eliminate income tax in New Mexico, referencing states like Texas that do not impose such taxes.
Cindy Nava, a Democrat elected to serve in the state Senate, brings a unique background as someone who has navigated challenges as an undocumented resident. She acknowledges the importance of representation and aims to amplify the voices of those with similar experiences.
New lawmakers like Joseph Hernandez and Anthony “Ant” Thornton are also focused on addressing specific issues in their districts. Hernandez aims to promote clean energy solutions, while Thornton seeks to develop measures for border security and crime prevention, drawing from his technical background in engineering.
As the New Mexico Legislature convenes, these new representatives reflect the evolving nature of the state’s governance, each bringing their own experiences and perspectives to the forefront in hopes of fostering effective change for their constituents.
