[Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Fire Country Season 4, as well as the Season 3 finale, Episodes 19 and 20, titled “A Change in the Wind” and “I’d Do It Again.”]
As Fire Country gears up for its fourth season, significant changes are on the horizon for the CBS firefighter drama, as two key cast members will be departing. Stephanie Arcila, who portrays firefighter Gabriela Perez, and Billy Burke, known for his role as battalion chief Vince Leone, will not be returning.
This news was confirmed by the show’s co-creators and executive producers Joan Rater and Tony Phelan, along with executive producer and showrunner Tia Napolitano, in a conversation with Deadline. While Arcila’s exit was publicly addressed, Burke’s future remains uncertain, particularly regarding the fates of his character, along with Sharon Leone (Diane Farr) and Walter Leone (Jeff Faley), who were left in a precarious situation trapped inside a burning building during the season finale. The storyline also follows Jake Crawford (Jordan Calloway), who recently resigned to pursue another opportunity.
The producers described these departures as part of a strategic storytelling approach. “With these shows, it’s vital to maintain an element of real danger and to tell stories that reflect authenticity,” stated Phelan. “We’re fully committed to a narrative that respects the real-life heroes we portray, where loss is part of the job.”
Echoing this sentiment, Napolitano emphasized the importance of realism in the series: “In Season 3, we leaned into the dangers faced by our characters. We wanted to elevate the stakes and reflect the reality that, unfortunately, accidents and departures happen in dangerous professions.”
The decision to part ways with Arcila had been made earlier in production, and discussions took place while filming the finale. Phelan elaborated on the creative rationale, stating, “It became clear that a reset was necessary for the dynamic between Bode and Gabriela. We hope to invite Stephanie back in a guest role, as the journey of those two characters is far from over.”
