Uber Launches Affordable Airport Shuttle Service to JFK
Uber is set to expand its airport shuttle offerings by introducing a service to one of the world’s busiest airports, John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York City. For a limited time, rides from designated stops in Manhattan and Brooklyn will be available for just $10. However, this introductory fare will increase to $25, which includes taxes, after April 30th.
Airport transportation is a significant segment of Uber’s business model, especially as travelers have voiced concerns regarding the increasing costs associated with rides to JFK. Known for being one of the pricier airports, the cost for rideshare services like Uber and Lyft can soar to $80 or more, depending on where passengers are picked up. In light of this, Uber’s new shuttle service aims to offer a more cost-effective solution for those looking to save on their travel expenses.
Users can conveniently book seats in the shuttle through the Uber app, allowing for up to four passengers per reservation. Rides can be arranged up to a week in advance or on the same day the ride is required. Importantly, customers will receive clear pricing details prior to booking, ensuring no surprise surge fees will apply.
Upon the shuttle’s arrival, riders must confirm their reservation with the driver using a QR code and a unique PIN code. Initially, each shuttle will have a capacity of 14 passengers. Riders are allowed one personal item, such as a purse or backpack, along with one piece of luggage (which can be either carry-on or checked) weighing up to 50 pounds. Similar to regular Uber rides, passengers will have the option to rate and tip their drivers via the app.
Uber’s service to JFK will include four designated routes with pickup points at key locations such as Port Authority, Grand Central Terminal, Chinatown, and Atlantic Center in Brooklyn. Shuttles will operate every 30 minutes from 5 AM to 10:45 PM, seven days a week. To facilitate this shuttle service, Uber is partnering with established fleet operators that employ commercially licensed drivers. In New York, Uber has teamed up with ETS, a shuttle provider with a longstanding presence in the region since 1996.
This new shuttle initiative is part of Uber’s broader strategy to explore shuttle services for various events, including concerts. For instance, it previously provided $15 rides to Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concert in Miami and recently introduced an $18 shuttle to LaGuardia Airport, now priced at $20. However, for any new airport services, Uber must first reach agreements with airport authorities. Currently, discussions are underway with Boston’s Logan International Airport to potentially introduce a similar shuttle offering there.
