UConn Claims 12th Women’s Basketball Championship

The University of Connecticut (UConn) has reclaimed its position as a powerhouse in women’s basketball, capturing its 12th national championship by defeating the defending champion South Carolina Gamecocks 82-59. This victory marks a significant milestone for UConn, ending a nine-year title drought that has seen some ups and downs for the program.

Leading the way for the Huskies was Azzi Fudd, who scored 24 points, while Sarah Strong also contributed 24 points along with 15 rebounds. Paige Bueckers, in her final collegiate game, added 17 points, helping UConn finish with an impressive record of 37-3.

Bueckers, who has faced her fair share of injuries throughout her career, capped off her journey with this significant championship, the first for UConn since 2016. This title is particularly meaningful for head coach Geno Auriemma, as it ends the longest period without a championship during his lengthy tenure, which began with the team’s inaugural title in 1995.

The match took place against the backdrop of a rich history of excellence in UConn women’s basketball, with iconic players like Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, and Maya Moore having graced its lineup. The atmosphere in Amalie Arena on the championship day was electrifying, with many former stars in attendance to witness the triumph.

Healthy at last and projected to be the No. 1 pick in the upcoming WNBA draft, Bueckers played a pivotal role throughout the championship season. Her career, which began with accolades such as being the first freshman to win AP Player of the Year, has been complicated by injuries that included a tibial plateau fracture, a meniscus tear, and an ACL injury. However, she showcased resilience and exceptional skill, making a lasting impact before moving on to the professional level.

UConn took control of the game in the second half, closing the first half with a 10-point lead. The third quarter proved decisive as Fudd, Strong, and Bueckers combined for 23 of the team’s 26 points during this stretch. Their performance enabled the Huskies to establish a commanding lead, culminating in a critical 12-3 run that sealed the game.

The game also represented a significant moment for South Carolina coach Dawn Staley, who was aiming for her third title in four years and an opportunity to tie with Kim Mulkey for third-most championships. However, the Huskies stood firm, executing their game plan effectively against a formidable opponent.

Before this championship run, UConn had faced its share of disappointment, having made just one title game appearance since 2016, with heartbreakingly close losses in the Final Four. Their last clash in a championship setting came in 2022 against Staley’s squad, a game that not only halted UConn’s momentum but also broke Auriemma’s perfect title game record.

The opening minutes of the championship game saw both teams engaged in a fast-paced exchange, with defenses eventually tightening as the first quarter ended with UConn ahead 19-14. By halftime, the Huskies had managed to extend their lead to 36-26, with Fudd and Strong leading the charge.

Looking Ahead

As UConn celebrating its return to the pinnacle of women’s basketball, the implications for future seasons and the upcoming WNBA draft are significant. The successes of players like Bueckers and Fudd will undoubtedly influence the next generation of talent and the narrative surrounding women’s collegiate basketball going forward.
