Republic of Ireland Manager Carla Ward Ready for First Match Against Turkey
Carla Ward, the new manager of the Republic of Ireland women’s national football team, has expressed her enthusiasm for the squad’s mental preparedness ahead of her initial match in charge against Turkey on Friday. This marks a fresh chapter for the team as they transition under Ward’s leadership.
Taking over from Eileen Gleeson last month, Ward brings a wealth of experience from her previous roles with clubs like Aston Villa, Sheffield United, and Birmingham City. The team’s first encounter under her guidance will take place at Tallaght Stadium in Dublin, set against the backdrop of their recent disappointment in the Euro 2025 play-offs against Wales in December.
“They’ve been top-drawer,” remarked Ward on Thursday, reflecting on the squad’s training sessions leading up to the match. “I’ve been saying to them this morning that the application, the attitude from every single one of them this week has been first-class.”
In preparation for the match, the squad will be facing a setback with the news that Liverpool forward Leanne Kiernan will miss this game due to a calf injury. However, there is hope that she may be available for the subsequent away match against Slovenia.
Ward, who has appointed former Republic of Ireland men’s international Alan Mahon as her assistant, emphasized her vision for the team’s playing style. “We’ve established a very clear way of playing,” she explained. “Alan and I both encourage energy and personality on the pitch.”
“I really want the players to have the freedom to express themselves,” Ward continued. “That’s essential for us to thrive as a team. After the game, I think you will see that philosophy come to life.”
As the Republic of Ireland prepares for this pivotal match against Turkey, the atmosphere within the squad reflects a renewed sense of optimism and determination under Ward’s stewardship.
