In an electrifying main event on Saturday night in Kansas City, Ian Machado Garry showcased his striking prowess, taking control of the fight against Carlos Prates for the first three rounds. Although he faced a tough challenge in the final two rounds, Garry ultimately secured a unanimous decision victory.
This win for Garry not only ended Prates’ impressive win streak but also dampened the reputation of the Fighting Nerds fight camp, thanks to Garry’s strategic approach and high-level execution.
Despite a valiant effort in the fifth round, Prates could not capitalize on his opportunity due to exhaustion. Lacking the stamina to fully exploit Garry’s momentary fatigue, he was unable to convert his momentum into a finish, despite landing a notable left hook that momentarily unsettled Garry.
Garry now inches closer to a potential title shot, while Prates, though not entirely defeated, saw his formidable aura diminish with this outcome.
In a notable co-main event, Zhang Mingyang dashed Anthony Smith’s hopes in what was meant to be a celebratory retirement fight, finishing Smith with a TKO in the first round.
Mingyang dominated from the outset, asserting control and landing punishing leg kicks, eventually causing a severe cut on Smith’s forehead with a striking elbow. The blood flowed into Smith’s eyes, marking the beginning of the end. By the conclusion of the bout, Smith was notably distraught, seated amidst the aftermath of a fierce battle.
Post-fight, the UFC honored Smith with a touching video tribute; however, his decision to retire from competition now seems well-timed after such a defeat.
