UK Foreign Secretary Criticizes Israel for Deporting Labour MPs
The UK’s foreign secretary has voiced strong disapproval of the Israeli government’s decision to deny entry to two Labour Members of Parliament (MPs) and subsequently deport them.
Yuan Yang, representing Earley and Woodley, along with Abtisam Mohamed, the MP for Sheffield Central, were barred from entering Israel due to suspicions that they intended to “document the activities of security forces and spread anti-Israel hatred,” as stated by the Israeli immigration ministry and reported by various outlets including Sky News and Politics UK.
The MPs arrived at Ben Gurion airport from Luton, accompanied by aides, but were detained shortly after their arrival.
In response to the incident, David Lammy, the foreign secretary, expressed his concerns, describing the situation as “unacceptable, counterproductive, and deeply concerning.” He further emphasized that the treatment of British parliamentarians by Israeli authorities is not aligned with diplomatic norms.
Lammy stated, “I have made clear to my counterparts in the Israeli government that this is no way to treat British parliamentarians, and we have been in contact with both MPs tonight to offer our support.”
He reaffirmed the UK government’s commitment to facilitating a return to peace efforts, with an emphasis on achieving a ceasefire, negotiating the release of hostages, and working towards a resolution in the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
