Ukraine has significantly enhanced its drone capabilities, transforming these devices into crucial assets in its defense against Russia’s ongoing invasion. The Vice Prime Minister for Innovation, Mykhailo Fedorov, indicated in an interview that drone technology has become pivotal on the modern battlefield, accounting for a substantial portion of combat losses incurred by Russian forces.
A recent analysis from the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) highlighted that Ukraine’s attack drones are responsible for a majority of the damage inflicted on Russian targets, particularly when used in conjunction with artillery. The impactful role of drones on the battlefield has driven Ukraine to boost its procurement efforts from a few thousand units in 2022 to over 1.5 million in the current year, as noted by Fedorov.
Fedorov mentioned that the bulk of these first-person view (FPV) drones are being produced within Ukraine, with current estimates suggesting that nearly all of them—about 99 percent—are domestically manufactured. Furthermore, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that Ukraine now possesses the infrastructure to produce up to four million drones annually.

Reports have surfaced indicating that Russian drones have increasingly posed threats not just to Ukrainian military personnel but also to civilians, with a significant rise in civilian casualties attributed to drone strikes.
Enhancing Safety for Soldiers
A new front in the use of drone technology involves unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), which are being deployed for various battlefield functions, particularly in logistics operations. These devices are effective in alleviating personnel losses experienced during last-mile supply missions of ammunition and food.
Fedorov expressed optimism about the role of these ground drones in safeguarding human lives during dangerous logistical tasks, noting their potential to reduce risks to soldiers significantly. He forecasts that by 2025, Ukraine will need to deploy tens of thousands of these machines.
Additionally, UGVs are being utilized in mine clearance operations, where they can perform hazardous tasks that would otherwise endanger human life. The RUSI report indicates that while the development of these technologies is ongoing, improvements are expected as experience and engineering knowledge grow.
