Ukrainian Artist Reflects on War and Resilience Through Memoir
As the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine approaches, artist and author Stefania Miro expresses her emotional journey through art and storytelling. Living in Canada, she grapples with the loss of her homeland while finding solace in her creative expressions.
Miro candidly reflects on her life before the invasion, stating, “My heart is breaking apart because here I feel safe. I enjoy my life in Canada, but my heart still belongs to Ukraine.” She recalls that fateful morning on February 24, when her life was irrevocably changed. “I lost my whole life; I had plans for the future. Everything was going well in Ukraine until it all fell apart that day.”
In her memoir, ‘Light in the Darkness; Escaping the War in Ukraine,’ Miro recounts her harrowing escape with her mother and their cat, traveling through Poland to reach Canada. “The constant shelling of Russian missiles at railway stations made it incredibly dangerous,” she noted. “They aimed to prevent people from fleeing, so we had to be extremely cautious.”
Upcoming Event: Sharing Her Story
Next week, Miro will offer an immersive experience at Metro Hub, inviting the audience to hear her powerful narrative. “When you meet someone who has lived through such experiences, it’s important to listen to their story,” explained Graham Ord from Metro Hub. “It brings a personal connection that is both compelling and necessary.”
Through her writing and art, Miro has found a pathway to healing despite the trauma she endured. She will be sharing her journey on March 6 at Metro Hub in Kelowna. This event will not only showcase her story but also highlight the resilience and strength of those affected by the conflict.
Miro’s contributions resonate not only with the Ukrainian community but also with all who appreciate the transformative power of storytelling in the face of adversity.
