Leadership is a journey of self-discovery, filled with moments of both realization and growth. Through my experiences over the past few years, I’ve become acutely aware of my own strengths and weaknesses as a leader. My direct approach, while effective in steering the company from its inception, has shown to sometimes stifle open dialogue. This recognition has led me to refine my leadership style to better fit the evolving dynamics of our organization.
Initially, I operated as one of the key decision-makers in building the company from the ground up with a modest budget of $350,000. However, my role has since transformed to focus more on creating environments conducive to the success of my team. As I onboard senior professionals into specific roles, it has become essential for me to foster their growth and development. I firmly believe that empowering senior leaders with the autonomy to think independently is critical for driving innovation and productivity.

Engaging in a candid self-assessment is not a common skill, yet it’s profoundly impactful. Taking the time to reflect on these experiences can enable leaders to refine their practices and enhance their organizational effectiveness.
By embracing constructive feedback from colleagues, co-founders, and stakeholders, leaders can significantly influence their own engagement and the overall functioning of their business. An effective leader acknowledges their shortcomings and embraces a willingness to grow; this authenticity is a foundation for exceptional leadership. Embrace the Reality of Being Wrong
Entrepreneurs often exude confidence, a necessary trait for those embarking on ambitious ventures. This confidence is pivotal as we rally support and investments for our ideas and steer our efforts continuously. Yet, this same certainty can lead to overconfidence, clouding our perception of critical challenges within our businesses and teams. To counter this, it’s vital to consistently step outside my comfort zone and explore new strategies that could enhance our operations.
Accepting critical feedback presents its challenges, particularly in hierarchical structures where power dynamics can inhibit open communication. Establishing a culture where team members feel secure enough to voice their opinions becomes crucial. It’s important to convey that their contributions are valued, which can be fostered by practicing more active listening rather than directing decisions unilaterally.
To develop my listening capabilities, I enrolled in a coaching program focused on active listening techniques. This training has been instrumental in my growth, allowing me to become more receptive to feedback, both given and received.
While I maintain my role as a guiding force with distinct visions, I also strive to be aware of my imperfections and areas needing improvement. Leadership is not a fixed destination; it involves steering a vehicle that must continually evolve. The results have shown positively—a more empowered team driving Novakid in exciting new directions has validated my approach to leadership and decision-making.
