Recently, the Horse Race Tests have gained significant popularity across Twitter and various social media platforms. But what are these captivating videos, and how did they originate?
What began as an indie developer sharing a “prototype” for a new game has transformed into a series of peculiar videos featuring uniquely designed horses racing through a quirky obstacle course aiming for a carrot.
This initial post quickly evolved, leading to a series filled with elaborate plotlines, distinct characters, and an impressive amount of fan art depicting rich narratives, culminating in an ending that left viewers eagerly anticipating what might come next.
Here’s an overview of the Horse Race Tests.
What are the Horse Race Tests?
Taking place between April 1 and April 25, the Horse Race Tests (HRT) are a series of deceptively simple videos. They feature blobs resembling horses with varied designs navigating through a chaotic maze, interacting sporadically as they aim for the carrot.
Viewers began to place bets on which horse would reach the carrot first, mimicking the excitement of actual horse racing as these animated horses bounced haphazardly until one emerged victorious.
Initially, the races were brief, often concluding in just a couple of minutes, with a horse frequently reaching the carrot without difficulty.
The creator, however, began to modify the maps, intentionally trapping horses in certain areas to increase excitement and interaction among the contestants.
As the developer noted, “I was experimenting with different shapes to see which could better trap the horses,” leading to increasingly chaotic race dynamics.
As the races progressed, fans grew attached to their favorite contenders. Cyan gained a loyal following due to its consistent struggles, while White became notorious for its inability to secure any wins.
The tension escalated during a decisive race where Brown, Cyan, and White competed on the same map—despite a solid chance, Brown triumphed.
A notable twist occurred when Cyan was notably absent from a key race, only to reappear later on a less challenging map, giving it an opportunity to finally win.
Subsequently, the narrative took a darker turn with the introduction of “Nightmare” horses, creating a stark contrast to the earlier races.
Races alternated between the standard format and this Nightmare subplot, eventually culminating in a showdown between White and a dark doppelgänger.
The conclusion featured a horse, potentially resembling Cyan, winning the final race, leading into the credits without a traditional victory screen.
There’s an intricate tapestry to this storyline, encompassing romantic elements between characters and much of the narrative being driven by community engagement, contributing to its ambiguity. The abrupt ending has left fans with numerous unanswered questions.

Currently, there are no plans to revive the Horse Race Tests. The creator is focused on other projects, and while a storyline has emerged from the videos, much of the depth is driven by the community’s imagination.
Despite its unresolved conclusions, the narrative remains widely open to interpretation, suggesting that the Horse Race Tests may not return in the foreseeable future.
