Universal Announces Major Theme Park Development in Bedford, England
In a significant expansion of its global presence, Universal has unveiled plans to establish its inaugural theme park in the United Kingdom. This new venture, set to grace Bedford by 2031, marks Universal’s first foray into the European amusement park market.
The ambitious 476-acre project will be located approximately 35 miles south of Bedford, a quaint town situated 60 miles northwest of London. Travelers from the capital can reach the site in around 35 minutes by train or 90 minutes by car, making it an accessible destination for visitors across the region.
U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his enthusiasm for the project, noting, “Today we closed the deal on a multi-billion-pound investment that will see Bedford home to one of the biggest entertainment parks in Europe, firmly putting the county on the global stage,” in a statement to Travel + Leisure.
The park is expected to feature several themed areas, offering a unique array of immersive storytelling, exhilarating rides, and innovative attractions, all enhanced by cutting-edge technology. Alongside the theme park, plans include the construction of a 500-room hotel and an extensive complex for dining, shopping, and entertainment.
While the specifics of the themed lands have yet to be disclosed, an artist’s rendering suggests a design reminiscent of the original Universal Studios in Hollywood, featuring a circular welcome area centered around a globe fountain, a large lake, and numerous roller coasters, coupled with an amphitheater for live performances.
Universal anticipates welcoming approximately 8.5 million guests during the park’s first year of operation, positioning it to become the largest attraction in the U.K. Furthermore, this venture is projected to create around 20,000 jobs during the construction phase and an additional 8,000 once the park opens its doors.
Though the specific franchises and exact themes remain officially unannounced, there is much speculation surrounding the potential inclusion of beloved series such as the Harry Potter franchise, The Lord of the Rings, James Bond, and Paddington. Until further details are confirmed, the focus remains on Universal’s strategic expansion into the British market.
Mark Woodbury, Chairman and CEO of Universal Destinations & Experiences, highlighted the significance of this development, stating, “Bringing a world-class theme park and resort to the United Kingdom is a tremendous opportunity and is part of our strategy to introduce the Universal brand and experiences to new audiences around the globe.”
