Jonjo O’Neill Jr Reflects on Triumph Hurdle Win and Grand National Ambitions

Jonjo O’Neill Jr delivered a stunning performance to secure a remarkable victory at the Cheltenham Festival, riding the unlikely 100/1 winner of the Triumph Hurdle. In a recent episode of “Unbridled” with Matt Chapman and Paddy Brennan, O’Neill Jr shared details of his Festival successes and his aspirations for the Grand National.

Return to Winners’ Enclosure

O’Neill Jr marked his return to winning at Cheltenham for the first time since 2019, when he rode Early Doors to victory in the Martin Pipe. His impressive ride aboard Jagwar for trainers Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero in the TrustATrader Plate further showcased his talent, highlighting the horse’s rapid ascent in form.

Building Partnerships

Having established himself as a favored jockey for JP McManus, O’Neill Jr frequently collaborates with notable horses such as Champ and has recently forged a new bond with Grand National contender Iroko. During the discussion, he reflected on Jagwar’s surprising improvement and his initial doubts about the horse’s ability to handle the competitive atmosphere of Cheltenham as the pre-race odds suggested.

“From his win at Wetherby, I had uncertainties about his progression,” O’Neill Jr noted. “He continued to surprise me with each race. Despite my doubts, he stepped up at Cheltenham, which was incredibly gratifying.”

Endorsements and Insights

Paddy Brennan commended O’Neill Jr, stating that the experiences gained during earlier races were instrumental in preparing Jagwar for the challenge at Cheltenham. “The groundwork laid at Wetherby and Bangor was pivotal to his readiness for this prestigious event,” said Brennan.

O’Neill Jr added, “Jagwar is a slow learner who has faced challenges both at home and in the races. His growth has been remarkable, and credit goes to Josh and Ollie for their exceptional training.”

A Closer Look at the Triumph Hurdle

Jagwar went off as the 3/1 favorite for the Triumph Hurdle. Despite facing challenges at the final jump, O’Neill Jr and Jagwar triumphed, crossing the finish line with nearly three lengths ahead of their closest competitor, Thecompanysergeant, trained by Gavin Cromwell.

With just five rides throughout the Cheltenham Festival, O’Neill Jr’s success rate has significantly increased, particularly following his unexpected win aboard Poniros in the Triumph Hurdle.

Reflecting on the race, he shared, “As we approached the first hurdle, I was optimistic. He jumped it like an experienced horse, which calmed my nerves. I noticed other competitors struggling to maintain their positions while I was still in a comfortable rhythm.”

“I was pleasantly surprised that they didn’t pull away from us as much as I anticipated. When we approached the last jump, I felt confident, thanks to his prior flat racing experience.”

The Importance of Riding for Willie Mullins

Chapman emphasized the honor of riding for esteemed trainer Willie Mullins, particularly in a prestigious race like the Triumph Hurdle. “Having the opportunity to compete under Mullins in such a high-profile event is truly extraordinary,” O’Neill Jr acknowledged.

Poniros’ victory marked him as a joint-highest priced winner in Cheltenham Festival history, joining the ranks of legendary horses like Norton’s Coin and Hipparchus.

Looking Ahead: Grand National Aspirations

As the memories of the 2025 Cheltenham Festival begin to fade, O’Neill Jr’s focus shifts to the Grand National at Aintree, where he plans to ride Iroko. He expressed optimism about Iroko’s recent performances and highlighted the horse’s strong potential, even in the midst of stiff competition.

“Iroko has shown consistent improvement, and I was pleased with his performance at Kelso, despite challenging conditions. Recognizing the field’s depth for the National, he still feels like the right horse for this race,” he remarked.
